20 Years of Avion Wealth: How It All Began

In 2026, Avion Wealth celebrates a significant milestone: 20 years of helping families build wealth and legacies. To understand where we are today, we need to look back at how it all began. The story of Avion isn’t just about numbers or markets; it’s about clarity, courage, and commitment. At the heart of it is our founder and CEO, Paul Carroll.

A Vision Born in Uncertainty

The seeds of Avion Wealth were planted in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. For Paul, then a commercial airline pilot, the world shifted in profound ways. Furloughs rocked the aviation industry and prompted deep reflection.

“What do I want my life’s work to stand for?” Paul asked himself. The search for an answer led him down an entrepreneurial path – one that would eventually become Avion Wealth.

At first, wealth management seemed an unlikely destination. Paul had spent time in a large brokerage firm where cold calls mattered more than client care. But a friend’s simple challenge changed everything: “There’s no rule that says you have to do it their way.”

That idea became the spark. Paul envisioned a firm rooted in service, integrity, and genuine care for people’s financial lives. A firm that could guide clients, especially pilots, executives, and business owners, through life’s turbulence with clarity and confidence.

The Original Vision

Originally named Efficient Wealth Management, the firm was founded on a single, powerful idea: intelligent investing grounded in integrity.

From the outset, Paul rejected industry gimmicks in favor of evidence-based financial guidance. He wanted to empower people with thoughtful, research-backed advice – the kind he wished had been available to him earlier in his career.

Trust, Built in the Cockpit

Avion’s earliest clients weren’t strangers. They were Paul’s peers—fellow airline pilots navigating the same professional pressures and financial complexities.

Conversations happened naturally: in cockpits, crew rooms, and between flights. Paul wasn’t selling services; he was offering clarity to those who needed it. That shared experience built trust long before there was a logo or an office.

Those relationships became the foundation of Avion Wealth’s enduring client-first philosophy.

Trials That Built Strength

The firm’s first five years were anything but easy. While Paul brought deep knowledge of investments and aviation-specific financial strategies, building a business was a new challenge. He dove into rigorous study, working with mentors, coaches, and professional programs to sharpen his skills.

Then came the 2008 financial crisis. Airline bankruptcies threatened pensions, and the retirement security of pilots across the country vanished almost overnight. While some clients were spared the worst, the moment revealed how fragile even the most stable financial plans could be.

This crisis reshaped the firm’s mission. Avion began expanding its reach to serve senior executives and business owners who needed clear strategy and long-term thinking. It also marked a turning point in the firm’s growth: hiring the first team members, opening a physical office, and building a client experience grounded in trust and resilience.

Legacy in Motion

Twenty years later, the firm that started with a question has become a trusted guide for families across generations. Avion Wealth was born from turbulence but built to last.

Today, our clients are served not just by Paul, but by a deeply experienced team, including three senior partners, Elizabeth Brady, Ashley Stewart, and Sarah McIvor, who have each been with the firm for over a decade. This continuity reinforces the depth of care and insight we provide.

Even more powerfully, we’ve watched our clients’ families, and our own, grow. From first meetings to graduations, retirements, and new generations, we’ve walked alongside many clients through the full arc of life’s milestones. Some of our partners’ children have grown up alongside Avion itself — a living testament to the kind of generational relationships we hold dear.

As we celebrate this milestone year, we honor the journey that brought us here and the legacy we continue to build with every client we serve.

For two decades, Avion Wealth has helped families not only build wealth, but build a legacy.
