Lessons from the Climb: A Letter from Paul Carroll

A Letter from Paul Carroll

Dear Clients, Friends, and Partners,

As Avion Wealth celebrates its 20th anniversary, I’ve been reflecting on the road we’ve traveled — not just the milestones we’ve achieved, but the people, lessons, and values that have shaped our journey. It’s humbling to look back and consider what two decades of building a firm has truly taught me. I want to share a few of those reflections with you here.

What’s the single biggest lesson I’ve learned in 20 years?
If I had to distill everything down to one truth, it’s this: business is about people, not products. Clients don’t seek us out for spreadsheets or market predictions, they come to us because they trust us with their futures. And that trust isn’t built by one advisor alone. It’s earned day after day by a team that shows up with integrity, consistency, and care.

Our greatest strength has never been just technical expertise, it’s been the relationships we’ve built and the people who make up this firm. That combination, I believe, has been our secret sauce.

What do I wish I’d done differently in the early years?
It’s tempting to reimagine a smoother path, but the reality is, every misstep and challenge shaped the foundation we stand on today. The early years were full of lessons — some learned the hard way. But it wasn’t perfection that moved us forward. It was curiosity, humility, and a relentless desire to improve the client experience, one step at a time.

What lessons came directly from clients?
Some of the most powerful insights I’ve ever gained came not from books or conferences, but from you — our clients. Your stories of resilience, ambition, loss, and purpose have profoundly shaped the way I see the world. You’ve challenged me, inspired me, and taught me what true financial stewardship looks like.

Your wisdom continues to inform how we serve others with empathy, clarity, and care.

Which values have proven timeless?
More than a decade ago, my partners and I sat down and put words to the values we wanted to define Avion Wealth: Client Centricity, Generosity, Empathy, Culture, and the Pursuit of Excellence. It only took a couple of hours, but those hours created something lasting.

We’ve only revised one sentence since then. That’s how right those values felt. They reflected not only who we were, but who we aspired to be. Today, they remain the compass guiding every decision and every relationship.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Whether you’ve been with us from the beginning or joined us more recently, you are part of what makes this 20-year milestone meaningful. I look forward to the next chapter — not just growing wealth, but building legacies that last for generations.

With gratitude,
Paul J. Carroll, CFP®
